Kyrgyz Music Friday

Kyrgyz Music Friday is a weekly feature in which I post a pop music video from an artist in Kyrgyzstan. It could be catchy, annoying, funny, insightful, brilliant, awful, or anything in between. It’s what’s playing on the radio, what all the cool kids are listening to these days. Kyrgyz Music Friday is not trying to appeal to your musical taste (which I’m sure is awesome), but simply gives you a glimpse into how pop music is done on this side of the world. Feel free to share your thoughts on this week’s video in the comment section!

This week’s video is for the song “Estey Jur” (Эстей Жур) by Dayir Ismadiyanov. According to Limon.kg, this was the second most popular song played on Manas radio last week.

I’m still a bit jet-lagged and loopy from my 14+ hour flights, so I didn’t quite feel up to the task of over-analyzing this song as much as I usually do. That, and I was incredibly distracted trying to figure out what’s going on with his hair. It looks like there’s a white stripe that encircles most of his head?

This video also echoed a pattern I’ve seen in several other Kyrgyz music videos (including this one), which is: guy and girl are happy in love, then someone leaves for someone else, and the other is upset about it. In this one, Dayir sees an ex-girlfriend in a car with another man and recalls how he was tragically abandoned after what the viewer can only assume was an unsatisfying night for that young lady. But then its revealed that he has a wife and kid and is totally happy with life. End of video, mysterious hair color unexplained.

Another article recently said he’s currently casting the lead girl for his next video. Who knows, maybe it will be better than this one! I’ll keep an eye out for sure.
