Why Bulgaria should be on your Holiday Hit List

It might not be the most obvious holiday destination, but Bulgaria has a lot to offer visitors. With a proud history, delicious food and wonderful beaches there’s something for everyone. Activities on offer include horse riding, diving, quad biking, cycling and snow sports, perfect for a more active holiday.

Free Bulgaria!
You might think nothing comes for free, but in Bulgaria it does. Tourists can enjoy a free two hour tour of Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital city. The friendly, English speaking volunteers will show you the city’s main sites and the tour is a great way to make new friends and get to know Sofia.

Foodie Bulgaria!
Bulgaria has many amazing places to eat but here are two of the best. Dream House, Sofia: this veggie restaurant can be a little hard to find, but it’s worth looking for. You’ll find delicacies such as grilled tofu and algae soup on the menu and on Sunday there is an all-you-can-eat buffet.

If you prefer something meatier then head to Pri Monahinite, ‘At the Nuns’ Place’. The restaurant is in the small churches’ courtyard and serves meaty treats like grilled pork and roast lamb. There is also an extensive wine list so you can treat yourself to your favourite tipple.

Birdy Bulgaria!
If you’d like to experience the local wildlife then why not book yourself on to a one day bird watching trip? You could see breeds such as ducks, warblers, woodpeckers and the more rare breeds like Squacco Heron and Imperial Eagles. All tours are hosted by professional guides and if you want to extend your experience then there are longer eight day trips on offer.

Historical Bulgaria!
Bulgaria has a rich cultural history and the Roman Fortress of Sexaginta Prista is a strong symbol of that heritage. Built in 70 AD, the fortress once housed around 600 soldiers. Inscriptions, sculptures and tombstones are on display, with information in English. The friendly guides will be happy to answer your questions and show you the more recent installation, the German Bunker, in the fortress’ grounds.

    1. I’ve never been there! I wouldn’t say it’s on the top of my to-go list, for some reason all of the Bulgarians I’ve met have always convinced me to go somewhere else. But who knows, maybe some day I’ll get there.
