Not that I absolutely don’t adore the embassy’s dining facility (known from now on as the “DFAC”), but it is nice to mix it up every once in a while. I’m sure there are typical restaurants dotted around Baghdad, like any normal city (because that’s exactly what it is…a normal city, right?), but inside the …

how food can save Middle East conflicts
I swear I’m on to something with my combined interest in food and Middle East affairs! This Ramadan, the hottest (and probably most miserable) one in several years, even the Moroccans and Algerians have found a way to put aside their differences…(at least until the meal is over). Al-Arabiya (English version) posted this variety piece …
Food Network: Iraq-style (Ramadan edition)
Here’s a vague vague hint about what I spend a lot of my time doing….I read and watch a lot of international news. Gosh, I’m interesting, I know. To facilitate this, I have access to streaming video for local and international TV stations, which, lucky for me, don’t always play news. In fact… Sometimes they …

update
After a bit of a snag, the blog is back up. I’m working on tweeking some previously-published posts, and I have many many drafts that just need a bit more editing until they’re ready, but your patience is appreciated! Fabio bought me a Turkish cookbook while in Istanbul, and it made me miss cooking and …
Honor first. Coffee second.
There are no Starbucks coffee shops in Baghdad (that I know of). Here in the embassy, we have Green Beans. The staff is friendly, the selection is decent, the music is either Beyonce/Akon, or weird new-wave spoken word music, and best of all, the internet is free and (mostly) unblocked.
“pear muffin cake” and why T-walls are useless
Guess who finally figured out how to use Picasa! Yay! I guess this is what you do when you have a day off and not much else to do. Yes, I’m living in a region that is bursting with culture and history that I’m longing to discover, but I might as well be in Texas, …

Pause
I guess it goes without saying that I’ve taken a loooong break from blogging, but believe me, a lot has been going on. The big news is that I’m moving overseas!!! Where exactly? I’m not sure I can say. Somewhere in the Middle East. When is this happening? Soon, unfortunately. Mid-July until next March-ish (or …
Grilled chicken taco
I’m so happy that it’s finally getting warm in DC! Yeah, it’s a bit rough with all of the random rainstorms, but it seems like most of the time the weather is pretty nice. So what better way to spend time in the warm weather than grilling? Luckily F’s and my apartment has an itty-bitty …
Cannolis and gardening
What a busy sort-of non-busy week…if that makes sense? Spring semester is finally over, Fabio is back from being abroad for seven weeks, and I have about two weeks until I start my one and only summer class. Somehow, with all this supposedly new free time on my hands, I still feel like I’m always …
banana bread with dark chocolate and walnuts
It’s about time I went food shopping…I think it’s been almost two weeks now. I mean, I still have plenty of food, but I’m in desperate need of some basics. How did I find out that I desperately needed some basic food items? Well, what I did have laying around were three brown, speckly bananas…so …
